Hello, and welcome to pianoTV! I'm your host, Allysia, a piano teacher, musician and overall music enthusiast based in the Canadian prairies, bringing you videos all about how to play piano. Allons-y!
2 Ways of Speeding Up a Piece
There are two ways I use every time I want to speed up a piece on the piano, which I call "walking" and "flying." In this episode, I outline what these methods entail, and how to implement them in your practice sessions.

No lies detected
How in the heck do I get a song that I paid for on their website into the musescore studio editor????? I don't see how to do this!!! It should be easy
Before watching this video, I always thought Impressionism is all about scenery, like it's taking you to something or somewhere your eyes can see/feel. With other style it's more like understanding what that person feels about something, whether that be love, sadness, anger, etc.
This is very interesting. Thank you. One point to note is that these techniques are for speeding up. Before we speed up, we need to learn the notes and start getting them into muscle memory. It's very risky to try to speed up until we've done this, because any mistakes we make can quickly become habits, and correcting these habits is much harder than avoiding them in the first place. Another point is that, while pieces by Bach and other baroque composers are often quite regular in their rhythms, this often doesn't apply to music from later periods. I'm currently learning Beethoven's trio Op1 no2. The first movement has some very easy passages in quarter- and eighth-notes, and some short but very tricky passages in triplet 16th notes. It would be a waste of time to play through the whole of this movement at, say 60bpm. Most of it is too easy to need this. So, for music that has passages of varying difficulty, I often feel that the flying method is the only one worth using. Finally, it's really important to practice the bridges on both sides of a passage we're practicing. I've sometimes started practicing some measure, only to realise that I was starting on the wrong finger, which wouldn't have happened if I had played a lead-in.
Good advvice
I find that I try to speed up a piece too quickly. I guess patience is.a virtue. Be content with slowly increasing the speed. I have a request for you. When playing two notes together (especially in my left hand) I have trouble playing them exactly simultaneously. One note always plays slightly ahead of the other. I find it is more pronounced following a big jump in hand position. Any tips on correcting this?
I loved your music history videos and I’d love some videos on philosophy history!
Honestly, those last pieces in the book are actually what I'm most excited for. I don't get why people would want to skip them! The Entertainer and At Last look really fun to play, and some clips I've seen of people performing those arrangements look quite good!
OMG. Do some research on pronunciation. Nadezhda and Bizet. Really??????????!!!!!!!!!!! Discredits your scholarship (which is actually good)….but….stopped watching.
Fantastic fantastic
This is the only piece that makes me want to play the piano (I play violin though😊). The 1st movement is so eeriely beautiful. The 2nd movement is a smooth transition. And the third movement is BOMB!!
5:00 which piece did she mean there?
I almost always start with playing through the entire piece, and normally some parts are weaker than other parts. Then I'll consentrate on the weaker parts and repeat them in 2-4 bar sections. The goal is not necessarily to get them up to full speed, but at least to get them up to a point where they're no longer the weakest parts of the piece. Then I play through the whole piece again, and notice that now some other parts have become the weakest parts. Rinse and repeat.
Need to play in a relaxed way and use efficient fingerings. Otherwise you get to a certain point and can't go faster...
Sometimes I "overspeed" - going somewhat faster than I can. Then, after a few minutes, going back to my normal tempo makes me relax and it feels easier.
How your hair straight on top but curly on bottom
How would you handle large works, like the 3rd movement of the Moonlight sonata? Take it in sections and then bridge them together?
That really helpful and timely, thank you 🙏
This is a wonderful lesson!! There is so much good honest information in this one. Thank you!!!!
I'm hopping over to Teoria as ear training Is my nemesis! I've avoided it until now but I can play the avoidance game no longer.
Plot twist - it's already fast enough.
Brilliant explanation Allysia, very clear, concise and real, thanks
Thank you!!!
What is that kawai
it’s good to see you back :) thank you for explaining this method
Good Idea- thanks
I also think you don't get the full feel of the piece, how the composer wanted it to sound if you always use the walking method. Your final rendition can even sound off, not with the spirit of the piece. And going slow can be discouraging. Sometimes it seems one will never bridge that gap to get to the final speed by inching along with one tick of the metronome, and it can lead one to just give up. At least that is my experience. Thanks for the video. Will try that 'flying' method soon!
Solid classical training seems to be long forgotten...
I like to use the talking metronome app on iPhone ❤
Does the type of metronome you use make a difference? Is a digital less helpful than a pendulum?
I can speed up but it’s always at the cost of accuracy.
I am working on my RCM exams so of course I need to get them up to speed accurately. But my teacher always encourages me to practice slowly and the speed wii eventually come;
Armenia 🇦🇲
Great! But can you please explain the difference between a slur and a phrase line? Nowhere can I find a clear answer to this. PLEASE help!
I wish you had demonstrated the mordants and half mordants in this piece
I love sight-reading!! I would say this is my stronger ability but I also play by ear.
i am the opposite, cant read and play at all together, so i learned to improvise.
This was so good. Thank you!!!
Wonderful content thank you so much! Lovely cat with white shirt. You baby must be 6 years old now, growing up with music and cat, what a blessing 🤗
Thanks!
Thank tou beautiful women
Can you be both? I am good at sight reading and playing by ear. Modern stuf I play by ear and classical I use music. When I play something like a Beethoven sonata I feel I can't do it justice without the music. For example, When playing mvt 3 of moonlight sonata I have memorized a lot of it but it seems overwhelming to learn it all without the music. Sometimes the hardest parts are what I seem to memorize though.
I can play the waltz in Am now. Thank you.
Nice how you gave ole Franz that side eye in the thumbnail. He looks like a "plaaya"!
Useful tips,very good video,beatyful girl
Thanks for your tips. You are actally awasome
The BWV 847 is not really easy. Especially the prelude seems to be harder than the fuge. I still struggle with the fast notes in this piece. The well known c major prelude is easy and ist followed by a quite hard fugue.
Top notch content delivered expertly. Words I needed to hear!
What do you think about learning from YT videos/Synthesia? As a guitar player that’s my default way to learn a piece.
you learn nothing form synthesia, you need to go into a structure of a song to play it really well.
@@wout123100I mean I learn the notes from synthesia (or similar program) and figure out the rhythm, articulation etc by ear (but by listening to real pianist performance).
I think you should learn sheet music as soon as possible because it isn't sustainable. I was like you and am now trying to learn to sight read and I can't even sight read the simplest children's songs right now. I know how you feel sheet music is a kind of torture in my eyes but like think how powerful you could be if you could sight read pieces. There aren't synesthesia videos for everything and it's hard to learn for fast pieces. Wish you luck on this awful painful annoying journey
One I would add, some sight readers are frustratingly robotic -- they sound like a player piano and not like a person
